Shin Tip: Episode #7 – The MayDay Review: Where to go from here…

Thanks to Everyone for jumping through all the hoops and submitting your MayDay Videos!

The Council Members have watched all the videos and critiques have been sent out. Just wanted to resend this again so everyone knows where to go from here…

Why does the Council require a MayDay video?

The MayDay videos are required in order to give you the best opportunity for success. The Council reviews each MayDay video submission and sends you our thoughts on your progress to make sure you are on the right track. This feedback is meant to give you insight about your dance from the Council’s perspective.

The comments are confusing, and/ or contradictory. How do I interpret that?

It’s important to remember that if we sound harsh or critical, our intent is to help by giving you our honest thoughts and suggestions.  It is our sincere hope that you will take our suggestions to heart, as they are intended to help you succeed in the audition process. The critiques are a collection from all Council Members, and are often unfiltered or contradictory. That’s because the Council is not a hive-mind. We all see and react to beauty differently. Keep what you like and leave the rest.

I’ve received the Council’s MayDay critique. Where do I go from here?

We totally get it. Getting critiqued when you’ve put a lot of effort into something, especially something as creative as this, is not always easy. If you’re feeling a little daunted or disheartened, there are lots of things you can do to refocus and get yourself (and your crew) back on the right track:

  • Seek Out Inspiration: sometimes taking a day and watching an entire season of World of Dance can really re-energize and refocus your thoughts. We should know. We utilize this method of unwinding during our yearly in-person Council Summits. Nothing works to clear the mind and inspire than watching creative and beautiful dance. Sometimes just one move can influence you to change an entire routine.
  • Brainstorming Sessions: We can’t tell you how many times we’ve heard the story about the newbie in the group coming up with the best ideas. Sometimes sitting down with the whole team and tossing ideas back and forth can bring that spark of enthusiasm to push you to the next level.
  • Bring in a Professional:  We all feel stuck sometimes, and don’t know where to turn. Try looking for a dance studio near you and see if you can book a consultation with one of the instructors. Have everyone in the crew chip in a few bucks. Sometimes an outside perspective can give you just the push you need.
  • Sign Up for our Mentorship Program: We designed our Mentorship Program to help groups that are struggling, or need some help getting to the next level. Our Mentorship Program entails an hour long meeting with one of the Council Members to discuss changes and ideas about your choreography. Mentors are a source of knowledge and have relevant experience in what you’re going through.
