SHINS please pass this information on to anyone in your group that is utilizing a fire tool that may have the appearance of a weapon, particularly fire “swords.”
Within Burning Man’s event Closure Order there is a particular clause that has to do with weapons. In cooperation with gate staff, we require all performers entering Black Rock City with fire tools that could be mistaken for weapons to carry a letter of permission from the Fire Conclave Council.
We want to make sure that performers will be able to complete their dance, the way they intended.
From the Closure Order:
Weapons – The possession of any weapon is prohibited and the definition of a weapon is as follows: “Weapon means a firearm, compressed gas or spring powered pistol or rifle, bow and arrow, cross bow, blowgun, spear gun, hand-thrown spear, sling shot, irritant gas device, electric stunning or immobilization device, explosive device, any implement designed to expel a projectile, switch-blade knife, any blade which is greater than 10 inches in length from the tip of the blade to the edge of the hilt or finger guard nearest the blade ( e.g., swords, dirks, daggers, machetes), or any other weapon the possession of which is prohibited by state law. Exception: This rule does not apply in a kitchen or cooking environment or where an event worker is wearing or utilizing a construction knife for their duties at the event.”
WHO – any performer that will be entering the gate of Black Rock City with a fire tool in the shape of a sword could be confused as a weapon.
- Complete the form posted here by August 1, 2022: https://forms.gle/QoTCnni91ysQiqgT6
- Once the form is submitted we will email you a signed document with permission to enter Black Rock City with the described fire tools.
- It is the responsibility of each fire performer to print the form and bring it with them to present to the Gate staff upon entry to Black Rock City.
IGNORING THE REQUIREMENTS will mean your fire tool could be confiscated at the gate.
Thank you for your cooperation.
